Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
